Sir Bani Yas Island
Sir Bani Yas Island is located approximately 170 kilometers
southwest of Abu Dhabi. It is the largest natural island in the United Arab
Emirates. It Spans over about 87 square kilometers. This unique destination

Early Inhabitants and
Archaeological Significance
The name of island originates from the Bani Yas tribe. Bani
Yas tribe is one of the earliest tribes to settle in Abu Dhabi. Archaeological
excavations have uncovered 36 distinct sites on Sir Bani Yas shedding light on
its diverse historical narrative. Notably the remains of a Nestorian Christian
monastery is dating back to around 600 AD were discovered in 1992. This
monastery is believed to have housed approximately 30 to 40 monks operated for
about 150 years after the advent of Islam which indicate a period of religious
coexistence. Artifacts from the site suggest active trade and cultural
exchanges with regions such as Bahrain, India and Iraq.
Transformation into a
Wildlife Sanctuary
In 1971 under the vision of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al
Nahyan Sir Bani Yas Island was designated as a Royal Nature Reserve. Sheikh
Zayed initiated a Greening of the Desert program by aiming to combat
desertification and create a haven for endangered Arabian wildlife. Over three
decades this extensive efforts led to the planting of millions of trees and the
introduction of various animal species which include the Arabian oryx, sand
gazelles and mountain gazelles. These conservation initiatives have transformed
the island into a thriving ecosystem and now home to over 17,000 animals across
30 different species.
