Warehouse421 is now known as 421. It is a vibrant arts and cultural center located in historic Mina Zayed district of Abu Dhabi. It was established in 2015 and this dynamic space is dedicated to nurturing emerging artists and creative practitioners from the UAE and the broader region. 421 has become a hub for artistic expression, research and public engagement By transforming two former industrial warehouses.

Mission and Vision

421 aims to provide a nurturing environment for emergent creative practices by encouraging artists to harness the arts as a means for social inquiry and transformation. This platform is committed to supporting the next generation of thinkers, researchers and practitioners who are deeply engaged with the cultural and social fabric of the region. 421 fosters a community where creativity and critical discourse thrive through its diverse programs.

Exhibitions and Programs

Warehouse421 has established itself as a dynamic cultural hub since its inauguration in 2015 in Abu Dhabi by offering a diverse array of exhibitions and programs that delve into themes of memory, heritage and contemporary artistic practices.

·        Inaugural Exhibitions: The opening of Warehouse421 was marked by several notable exhibitions that set the tone for its future endeavors. Lest We Forget is Emirati Family Photographs 1950-1999 showcased a collection of personal photographs which provided intimate insights into Emirati life over five decades. Another exhibition was 1:100 The Warehouse Reimagined which featured artistic interpretations of warehouse models by exploring the concept of transformation within the Mina Zayed area. Mina Zayed: Through the Lens of Jack Burlot presented photographs capturing daily life in the Al Mina region by offering a unique perspective on the evolution of community.

·        Thematic and Collaborative Exhibitions: 421 has consistently engaged in thematic exhibitions that challenge conventional narratives. For instance a notable exhibition examined the intersection of visual arts and literature which featured works that blended text and imagery to explore cultural histories and personal narratives. This approach not only broadened the scope of artistic expression but also fostered interdisciplinary collaboration among artists.

·        Community Engagement and Educational Workshops: Educational outreach remains a cornerstone of mission of 421. The center offers a variety of workshops and talks designed to engage the public and demystify artistic processes. These programs cater to diverse audiences from children participating in imaginative play sessions to adults exploring traditional crafts and contemporary art practices. These initiatives foster a deeper appreciation for the arts within the community.

Residency Programs

421 offers several residency programs aimed at nurturing creative talents which are as under,

·        Homebound Residency: This six month program supports creative practitioners from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (MENASA) region in producing new works and exploring digital forms of community engagement. Residents receive curatorial support and a production budget to realize their projects remotely.

·        On Site Residency Program: This is a five month program with onsite residency. In this initiative 421 provide artists with studio space at the 421 Arts Campus. This multidisciplinary program encourages experimentation and community engagement across various creative disciplines.

 

Capacity Building Initiatives

To enhance professional development of people 421 offers programs such as,

·        Graduate Internship Program: A six month paid internship offering early career development and hands on experience in the arts and culture sector.

·        Exhibition Guides Program: Designed for graduate and postgraduate students. This initiative provides specialized training to conduct engaging and accessible exhibition tours to enrich their knowledge and communication skills.

Opening Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM; closed on Mondays.

Admission: Free entry to exhibitions, some workshops and programs may have individual pricing.
