Concept and Vision

The Dubai Frame is often referred to as the “biggest picture frame in the world.” However, it is much more than just a photo opportunity. Its design represents a window into past, present and future of Dubai. From one side of the frame visitors can see the historic areas of Old Dubai such as Deira, Karama and Bur Dubai while on the other side provides panoramic views of skyline of New Dubai that includes the Burj Khalifa and Emirates Towers. The idea behind the Dubai Frame was to create an attraction that reflects story of Dubai. The Frame showcases transformation of Dubai from a humble fishing village to a global metropolis. The project was initiated by the Dubai Municipality as part of the commitment of Dubai to enriching its cultural and tourism offerings.

Architecture and Design

The Dubai Frame was designed by Fernando Donis. Fernando Donis is an award winning architect who conceptualized the frame as a portal connecting the old and the new Dubai. His vision of Dubai Frame won a global design competition organized by ThyssenKrupp Elevator in 2009. The Construction of Dubai Frame was started in 2013 and it was completed in January 2018. The total cost of construction of Dubai Frame was of approximately AED 160 million. The structure is made of reinforced concrete, steel and aluminum. 15,000 square meters of gold cladding was done that adorn the exterior to reflect opulence of Dubai.

The dimensions of the Dubai Frame are based on the golden ratio (1:1.618) which is a mathematical principle often associated with harmony and aesthetic perfection. Two Vertical Towers: The structure of Dubai frame was made of two towers which are connected by a glass bridge at the top. Due to the use of golden mathematical ratio it becomes a beautiful frame. The glass bridge is made of transparent glass floor that offers a thrilling view of the ground below along with sides. The frame is illuminated with dynamic LED lights that enhance its grandeur at night.
